Rudy Peterson

Rudy Peterson (1904-2003) paved the way for Oriental land developers to finance their projects through the Bank of Hawaii.  This was a watershed economic opportunity that paved the way for the Orientals to become major Hawaii tycoons.  Unfortunately, the tycoons took all the credit for being brilliant without giving credit to a rare (good luck) opportunity after the war and the generous credit extended by Peterson.

Rudy was a buddy of Hung Wai (1905-2002) and was instrumental in enabling HW to create the huge subdivisions in Aiea, Pearl City and Waipahu known as developments of Pacific Land Hui. It helped that HW knew the Amfac people who sold him the land.  Pacific Land Hui was a limited partnership headed by HW as general partner and a bunch of AJA contractors who were his “boys” at one time or other as limited partners.  All made bundles of money as demand far exceeded supply after the war. The engineers were Sunn Low Tom & Hara; Takushi Okamura was the attorney and the accountant was another Buddahead whose name escapes me (later Coopers Lybrand I think). Oahu Homes was the sales agent and was run by some of HW’s “boys.”  No one had to hustle for sales in those days because buyers lined up to purchase the “package deals” which had just emerged in those days as an evolution of subdivided land. The first phase sold for $14,000 for a 3 BR home (no sidewalks and overhead utilities). The second phase sold for $17,000.  HW was really riding high in those days.

Masaji Marumoto (1906-1995) was on BoH Bd. of Directors, & followed Hung Wo Ching under Peterson. Masaji represented Chinn Ho w/Wai’anae resort plans [after sugar plantation closed down], which is how H-1 Freeway got thru via federal funds [Heco plant/etc.].  BoH’s Cooke aristocratic persona was diffused via Peterson’s grassroot image.  BoH’s Link Moore a grassroot acolyte.  Luso/Portuguese Joe Pao 1916-1977 w/BoH [great CPA Henry Alves under Pao].  Pao’s greatest project was utterly creative Enchanted Lakes.  — Curt

Kyoto Temples Were Original A-bomb Target

Kyoto was targeted for A-bomb until Sec. of War Henry Stimson nixed it because Henry loved Kyoto’s ancient temples when Henry was there on his honeymoon.  No, Edwin Reischauer had nothing to do w/nixing Kyoto. Our destiny-maker John Young [spawned River St. Church Christians Dan Inouye/Ted Tsukiyama–our greatest contemporary leaders today like Abraham Akaka/Herb Choy/Jack Mizuha/Hung Wai & Hung Wo Ching/etc.] missioned in Kyoto.  — Curt

Random Thoughts

Imagine, Pres. Bush wanted to privatize social security & invest funds into the stock market.  442 Tom Mizuno from Waialua married Kona gal, worked Pahala Sugar, then moved to Hilo/sold cars.  Tom was a gutsy strong baseballer, as good as anyone here [outfield/clean-up long ball hitter].  Tom is back in Waialua.  Rich Nakamura’s dad’s original last name was Tenjoma [Yamaguchi prefecture], but dad Masa adopted by Nakamura.  Masa was Kitagawa Motors’ brain behind the operation. Dopey Morita Pepe`ekeo boy, married Nekoba from same village.  Dopey had tremendous inner fire/determination, though he didn’t show it on the outside.  Pepe`ekeo mill camp boys incl. Norm Mizuguchi/Russ Okata/Bobo Lapenia.  Rich De Sa pitched for Asahi/got connected to Japan major league via Angel Maehara/unlike his cousin Tony who actually was athleticly gifted but didn’t go far because Tony played for Luso Braves.  Yes, Joey De Sa Diamond at Lanakila Field/Park is named after Rich’s brother’s son [Joey’s mom is Puerto Rican Matias — great baseball genes].  Obama econ mainstay Larry Summers (born 1954) needs to stop being Mengele [Summers said that men innately smarter than women in science/engineering].  Marker of superiority — Summers genius, so to speak, precocious mind.  Yikes!! Rahm-bo Emanuel (born 1959) made $232,000 as Freddie Mac director 2001, after FM was plagued w/bad loans.  Directors are casual/part-timers, not full-time employees.  John Podesta [dad Italian/mom Greek] (born 1949) salutary backdrop, Georgetown Law grad ’76 [peers Ron Ibarra of Kona/Mazie Hirono], Bill Clinton’s chief of staff (1998-2000).  When Henry Peters was asked why he/BE trustees made a killing as trustees, he flatly said, “we’re like CEOs of large corporations.”  Yikes!  Don’t ask Rahm Emanuel why.   — Curt

    Curtis,

There is a 1930’s photo book put together of the Portuguese families in Hawaii. Can’t remember if it was just Big Island families or statewide as I only saw book once. It has wonderful photos of extended families with info on where parents came from. Some of the photos were very enlightening as I had never understood why my uncle made such a point of saying our family wasn’t “black” Portuguese.

Some of the families obviously had different roots and some came from India and South Africa as well as Azores. A number of the Portuguese families showed obvious signs of having African roots (probably due to the Moors) and others had Indian (India) roots.

As for Helene, yes, she is of African-American descent (I’ve met members of her extended family which includes a number of judges). She is very proud of her roots and her family’s accomplishments.

Hi Pua: Thank you for your enlightenment — the Luso book is Memories of Hawaii on families from each island. Gerald De Mello’s vuvu owned Long Soup Corner
[ergo, Kaneshiro saimin shop] across today’s Kaneshiro Store in Honoka’a. In the rear of that store front corner lot was Antone Souza Jr.’s meat market, the 1st one ever on Mamane/Main St., not Antone’s wife’s Aunt Carolina Andrade’s sons’ meat market 1924 [Carolina died in 1920]. Fascinating history of our Luso/Portuguese which no book has ever delved in. Many untold heroes/heroines abound, not just the high shelfers like Manuel Botelho. Obrigad/aloha, to my friend Pua, –Curt

Is this Blog in a Book? If so, is it available? I have never read anything about home with such pleasure, deep thought, appreciation and laughter. Ed Hiram
