Sara Mae Landers — age 104 and going up.

I would suggest Brittany Smart as most intriguing person on the Big Island in 2010. Brittany came from out of nowhere as a young, bright challenger for the District 6 council seat and upended the council majority. She even made it look easy. She did this with a positive campaign and obliterated assumptions that Mr. Guy Enriques could not be beat.
Mr. Enriques had a major footprint in Kau with extensive family, business and political connections. He raised unprecedented funds in his defeat of Bob Jacobson in 2008. Angel Pilago replacing Kelly Greenwell was not a particular surprise. Fred Blas’ defeat of Emily Naeole was not a particular surprise.
So intriguing? I say Brittany Smart. I think she will be most intriguing for 2011 too.

Yes James,
And isn’t it close to 105?
Anyway, Sara Mae has a lot to say about our community going back to the 1920′s.
Great person and personality as we both know.
Rather unique and intriguing too.

County-wide I have to agree with Rob that Brittany Smart is the most intriguing person of the year.

I will go with Dr. James on this one.
Saramae is not only 104, 105 in April, but she lives each day to the fullest, shares her wisdom and vision freely and is a pure delight to spend a few hours with as I have each holiday season since she was 100. Her memory is as intact as the teeth she claims to be her own. Maybe denistry should give her a quick exam for clues.
She does not dwell in the past and is on the cusp of all things involving travel. She wants to go Africa in 2011 after riding an elephant in Thailand this year.
Her daughter, Sara Burgess, is the model of caregiving, nurturing but not controlling her mom’s being. I have friends in their 80s and into their mid 90s but Saramae simply tops them all.

I’ve got to go with Rob and Russell. Brittant Smart.
I do admire Saramae. She can tell us all a thing or two about life in the past. Physically and mentally she is strong and amazing. An impressive woman!
But Brittany is more “Intriguing”. Where did she come from, where is she going, and how will she affect all of us? I think it’s the unknown that makes Brittany my choice.
