Summer of 2009 a designer competition was launched to poll for the most admired eco-luxury infant clothes designer. Being that our BIC hostess has a newborn, it seems appropriate to share the results.
Admittedly, the global contest was not about the “best buy” and without concern of where production took place. And although infants don’t demand gender threads, fashion typically highlights female garments. No intentional prejudice here!
The purpose was to expand awareness of exceptional green-baby designers. Not only for their creativity, but their production strategies as well.
Nominations were honored through August of 2009 and announced in October of that year. No doubt many talented designers never knew about the competition and in reality, the winning designers were determined by how many fans they could stir to vote. Accordingly, I like to quote Casey Cowell who wrote:
Where you want the contest is not among people, but among ideas.
There are too many exceptional designers for one post, so I’ll be spreading them out. The winners will be announced at the end of this series. Meanwhile, comments from local designers are especially encouraged.
Below is the first example, Zia and Tia, whereas company owner/designer Julie Jonas directs outsourcing from Montreal. Julie is passionate about everything sustainable and lives in a green home with her husband who manages their Canadian health food store.
These pictured hand-knit items are made from the finest 100% certified organic Merino wool, spun entirely from unbleached, 3 ply or 8 ply un-dyed Merino fleece. No harsh chemicals are used in dying processes and garments are BIO-GRO certified. All garments are hand washable and come in great colors, some natural without dye.
In summary, Julie and her company design luxury, practicality and beauty with handmade and vintage-inspired organic designs. The purity of materials respects newborn skin in addition to our planet. Check out the site to also find bedding, toys, and more.
