(Media release) — The Hawaii Fire Department invites the public to attend the groundbreaking and dedication ceremony of its Makalei Fire Station site located south of the 32 mile marker on the Mauka side of the old Mamalahoa Highway across Makalei Drive, North Kona. The ceremony will take place on at 10:30 a.m., Monday, May 9, 2011.
“This marks the first formal construction step toward establishing a much needed emergency response facility in North Kona, and I would like to thank the residents for their patience in this long awaited project,” Fire Chief Darryl Oliveira said.
Mayor Billy Kenoi thanked Chief Oliveira and the Hawaii Fire Department staff that worked to make the Makalei Fire Station project a reality.
“This important public safety project is funded in part with $4 million the Fire Department obtained by competing for a federal grant under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009,” Mayor Kenoi said. “Winning that grant saved money for county taxpayers, and allowed this critically needed public safety project to move forward.”
