(Adapted media release) — A 22-year-old California woman living on Hawaii Island died Monday, May 30 from injuries she sustained in a one-vehicle crash on the Rubbish Dump Road at the Hilo landfill on Sunday.

The victim was identified as Christina L. Delgado, a native of Santa Cruz, California.

Responding to a 1:35 p.m. call, south Hilo patrol officers determined that a 26-year-old Kea’au man had been operating a blue 1992 Toyota SR-5 pickup truck and traveling south on the Rubbish Dump Road when he lost control, ran off the left side of the road and dropped about 50 feet down an old rock quarry.

The truck landed on its roof and pinned his female passenger inside.

The driver was able to free himself from the vehicle and go for help.

Fire Department personnel extricated the woman from the vehicle and took her to Hilo Medical Center. She was later flown to The Queen’s Medical Center, where she died at 7:45 p.m., Monday.

The driver of the vehicle, Marco A. Delgado, is the brother of the victim. He was arrested on suspicion of operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant, negligent injury and having no insurance. He was released pending further investigation, as he was confined at Hilo Medical Center due to his injuries.

Traffic Enforcement Unit officers have reclassified the negligent injury case to a negligent homicide investigation. An autopsy has been ordered to determine the exact cause of death.

Police ask that any witnesses who saw the vehicle at the Hilo Drag Strip prior to the crash call Officer Andres Fojas at (808) 961-8889.

Christina Delgado, meanwhile, described herself on Facebook as someone who enjoyed dirt-bike riding, four-wheeling, going to the beach, partying, “chillin’ with friends and family,” “dancing til I break a rib,” hiking, camping and softball.  Among her favorite sport teams were the San Francisco Giants, the San Francisco 49ers and the Stanford Cardinals.  She enjoyed a range of music, from Bob Marley to the Beatles, and she watched a lot of movies and television.

I think newspapers should research there stories better. So many “facts” in this story are wrong! Starting with ages, year of the truck, etc. My condolences to the family for this. I think this reporter should be made to research before they just write whatever they want. The Big Island Chronicle is now considered a waist of my time because I cannot trust there information any longer.

Wow Jake, the year of the truck would have made such a difference to this story! And your “waist’ of time was obviously your education!
    Get real!

    @Jake,

You should take up your complaint with the police department, since this blog entry was largely based on a press release.

And if your friend Marco wants to talk about what went down, I can be reached at (808) 938-8592. I sent him a FB message but received no word back from him.

Sounds like you are close to the story and you might be able to get me in touch with him.

His cousin, who I attempted to contact to get as many facts straight as I could, asked that I respect the family’s privacy.

Perhaps if I would have been a lot more aggressive and hounded the family I could have found out the correct year of the truck.

You know, I personally don’t believe in being one of those news media vultures.

It’s unfortunate that police didn’t get the year of the truck correct, but I think the Delgados will appreciate me for not hounding them…

    Please pass along my condolences.
