There is an oh so simple and cheap solution to this problem. Modern composting toilets. In 1975 I was working with the health dept. in Mendocino Co. Calif. looking into permitting composting toilets. At that time composting toilets from Sweden were available that would serve six people, using the electricity equivalent to one 60 watt light bulb, producing 1 3# coffee can of compost/year with less bacteria than garden soil according to Swedish national lab. They could sit in the space of the average ‘throne’; no need for large basement or in ground tanks. I don’t know the the cost would be now but recall it was like $1300 per unit at the time. I’d guess would have to be under 2K, not the 50K per household estimated for a centralized system. AND there would be no up keep costs for such a system and no danger of the usual brown water events that happen so frequently here in the islands with ‘standard’ systems. Oh yeah and no water usage. Will some one please explain why we are so knuckle headed re our ‘wastes’ (oh yeah no waste with composting toilets ~ put it on the garden)? Wake up people. Wake up county. This problem could be over in a week!

The composting toilet would be a great solution for that part of the equation but there is also the greywater part and the household chemicals that are involved in that.
