Puna agriculture supporters are invited to the second meeting to assist the College of Agriculture, Forestry, and Natural Resource Management (CAFNRM) at UH Hilo perform a preliminary needs assessment for a “boots on the ground”, modern and personalized rural outreach program based in Puna and establishment of an associated Higher Education Learning Network for the region as outlined in Hawaii State Senate Resolution (SR) 150 which passed the 2013 legislature after being introduced by Senator Russell Ruderman.  The purpose of the meeting is to gather input from the public as to what types of training and information is needed to assist existing farmers and food processors in the Puna district, as well as what is needed to attract new farmers to grow and process food for local markets.  It is hoped that this outreach program focusing on higher education needs will help to create jobs in the district and provide a business incubator approach to encourage greater food crop production.  The public’s input is welcome at this meeting which will be heldfrom 6:00 to 8:00 PM

on Monday, Nov. 25 at the Pahoa Community Center.  For further information please contact CAFNRM at 932-7691.
