Puna News — Support The Call For A Pahoa Librarian

LibrarianGraphic3Susan Kay Anderson, a teacher at Pahoa High Intermediate School and Virginia Brautigan Aste, a substitute teacher in Pahoa, have worked with Sen. Russell Ruderman to create an online petition calling for the State Department of Education superintendent Kathryn Matayoshi to work with the State Legislature to bring a school librarian to Pahoa.

Anderson and Aste note that for the past five years Pahoa High and Intermediate School has not had a librarian.

“Students begin post-secondary experiences already at a great disadvantage:  they don’t know how to use a library.

As educators, we are demanding equity for all Pahoa area students that they may have universal access to educational resources.”  To see and sign the teachers’ petition, visit

Thanks for posting this, Tiffany! As of today, we have 86 signatures. I will email the petition at the end of January. Thanks for the support, signers. We can achieve equity for Pahoa. We can uphold civil and human rights for all.
