Official Hurricane Shelter list

The Civil Defense link below shows the official hurricane shelters on the island–and it’s distinctly bad news for the southern half of the island.  For the vast stretch between Kea’au and Captain Cook, there’s only one shelter: Ka’u High School in Pahala.  But that only echoes other educational infrastructure:  Ka`u High is the only high school serving  that area, too.  The list of official shelters consists of the island’s high schools, plus one elementary:

Laupahoehoe School

Kohala High & Elementary

Kealakehe High

Konawaena High

Hilo High

Waiakea High

Keaau High

Pahoa High & Intermediate

Honokaa High & Intermediate

Kau High

Waikoloa Elementary

As of 6:30,  Iselle had weakened slightly but was still a Category One hurricane and was expected to remain so, with sustained winds of 75 mph and higher gusts.  The projected track of the storm’s eye has varied overnight, but from  the latest reports, appeared  to be headed towards a direct hit on Puna and a probable crossing over the Saddle.  But this is a huge storm, larger than the entire island, so everyone should expect to be affected.
