Open Letter to our Legislators: What’s Wrong with the Medical Marijuana Bill

Dear Senator Espero, other Legislators,

The reason you are having so much trouble with the dispensary bill is it is not good for the people of Hawaii. To tell you the truth, the amendments ruin it, and make compliance unaffordable and discriminatory for all but multimillionaires with health licenses.

For one, the definition of a “person” needs to be an actual person, not some shady LLC set up to steal profits from Hawaii residents. One license for one aspect (grow, manufacture, dispense) for one person. Give as many Hawaii residents (not big mainland growers, dispensary owners, pharmaceutical or tobacco companies) a chance to make a good living and people and the State of Hawaii will benefit from your aloha.

Two, if you feel in your heart that sick cancer patients on chemotherapy deserve a bit of chocolate or brownie to take their medicine, then give them the “edibles” from SB 682.

Three, throw away all the amendments (both House and Senate) and revert back to the original HB321. We can’t handle the overkill in compliances, there is a higher price for every unnecessary and burdensome requirement.

Unfortunately, the police, judicial system and NED are still in the grip of “reefer madness,” a self-perpetuating industry of prison for profit and stealing peoples assets through property forfeiture. Remember, the police and narcotics enforcement divisions should be focused on the extreme problems of ice, heroin, cocaine, meth, and other actual crimes like theft, robbery, assault: crimes with actual victims, not the cannabis plant. Please also remind yourself they are not doctors, and they have no business lobbying against laws aimed at giving people access to an allowed plant of their choice.

You as our law makers have got to rise above the money hungry crowd, and do what is right for the 13,000+ medical cannabis patients in the State of Aloha!

Thank you for your attention to this matter!

Medical marijuana = amendment to the law of illegal drugs.
    What illegal drug is next?
A “medical excuse” to smoke pot plainly legalizes a drug for users who already have been using PRIOR to their “illness”.

    James Weatherford says:

Therapeutic quality of the plant preceded the plant being made illegal — “illegal” is not a natural state and is a human concept.
Illness and curative effects preceded current attempts to make the plant legal.
The current legislation is making a (very clumsy, but, much overdue) attempt to remove the regressive (and relatively recent) illegal status of a plant recognized to have useful therapeutic effects for centuries before being made illegal.

Cannabis has been legal and safe for thousands of years.
    Simply end the hypocritical prohibition.
Anything else, like the current legislation, is a huge waste of our resources.
    Full sun, organically grown.
And with access to a lab for testing.
With regards to Cannabis don’t need more than that.
    Stop already!

It’s hard for me to understand that some people still think that way. Please ask yourself why is marijuana “an illegal drug” in the first place? I wonder if you really know? Here is a little history on how this all happened for those who want the truth and the science.

The following are some of the main arguments used to make cannabis illegal.

The fist drug czar Harry Anslinger in his speech to the 1936 Congress said –

“there are 100,000 total marijuana smokers in the US, and most are Negroes, Hispanics, Filipinos, and entertainers. Their Satanic music, jazz, and swing, result from marijuana use. This marijuana causes white women to seek sexual relations with Negroes, entertainers, and any others.

The primary reason to outlaw marijuana is its effect on the degenerate races.

Marijuana is an addictive drug which produces in its users insanity, criminality, and death.

Reefer makes darkies think they’re as good as white men.

Marihuana leads to pacifism and communist brainwashing
You smoke a joint and you’re likely to kill your brother.

Marijuana is the most violence-causing drug in the history of mankind.”

That is the foundation marijuana prohibition was built on. Bigotry, ignorance, greed, and stupidity is the root of marijuana criminalization and why it is still illegal today. These outrageous fabrication and lies were used to make one of the oldest most widely accepted and used medicines on the planet, illegal, it made no sense then as it doesn’t to this day. As I remember even the AMA opposed prohibition of marijuana during those congressional hearings.

I believe the majority of the pain and suffering inflicted on our nation over marijuana use is a result of that ignorance and some more progressive lies that followed, like Nixon’s lies about marijuana when he started the disastrous war on drugs.

What is true is today is tens of thousands of people across the country are rediscovering safe medical relief in marijuana and thousands of medical doctors (experts) prescribe it.

Let’s be clear, that is nobody’s business except the patient and the doctors that issue the prescription, Patients should not be persecuted or dehumanized for the fact they chose a healthier, happier, treatment.

I won’t apologize for feeling better with marijuana, my decisions about what the best medical treatment for my severe arthritis is are just that, mine. If someone else doesn’t like it, don’t use it, take your pills, your choice, worry about yourself and let us do the same.

I use marijuana because it works, I do not care if people believe that or not, it really is none of their business anyway.

Anyone who knows me saw the transformation that has happened since I started using medical marijuana again in 2012. Ask anyone, the improvement in my ability to walk is unmistakable. FYI, I was considering knee transplants in 2012, now instead I am going to start riding waves at Pohoiki again. Something I have not been able to do in over ten years. How? Marijuana works, I am living proof and have the medical records to prove it.

    Medical marijuana is pono……

James, thanks for the reminder that a plant is natural, and a human law is NOT. Important point.

Thanks for the history, Bob. Really glad to see it here because with all the new info coming down the pike about cannabis’ efficacy, the history of prohibition remains largely unknown. Prohibition was absolutely built on racism, ignorance, greed and stupidity. It was a baldfaced lie to place it on Schedule I (‘no known medical use’).

So glad you’ve got your mojo back and are no longer suffering with those knees!

Na’au pono, isn’t it wonderful that patients will no longer be treated and punished as criminals?

    Excellent, salient point, Sara.

Cops should have zero right to lobby against patients. Just like lawmakers should have zero right to legislate women’s bodies. They all do it anyway. There oughtta be a law!

And Robert, I’ll see you out in the water,
Surfing, and many things are recreational.
    And how medicinal is that?
    Medicinal surfing.
    Get your permit here..
    Breathing is medicinal. And recreational!
    Bananas are medicinal. And recreational!
Robert, thanks for reminding us of the
racist/anti-sex excuses used to promote a prowar/propetroplastic agenda.
This prohibition created an ongoing health threat.
Like The USA’s prolonged occupation of Hawaii.
    To your health!
