    (Media release) — Bare & Core Expression is proud to present its fifth annual Drum & Percussion Festival at 6 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 14, 2009 at Palace Theater.

    The production will showcase various styles of traditional and non-traditional drum and percussion performance groups, such as Hawaiian, Latin, Asian, Caribbean, African, many and more. The featured artists and groups are from the community, sharing their passion for music and dance and multicultural facets of our community.

    Musasa Marimba Ensemble, one of the groups that featured in our past festivals, will again share their great music and enthusiasm for the music of Zimbabwe, Africa. Another returning group is Baraba Jaba.  They will showcase a new Latin music and dance this year.  One of the favorite groups from last year’s festival is Lobo Del Mar.  The family owned and operated entertainment company has traveled and performed around the world and have settled in Hilo in recent years.  They will share various styles of percussion music and dance performances from around the globe.  Many other artists and groups will be featured in the program representing various styles of percussion music and performances.          

    Due to the group’s belief in the accessibility of the arts, $10 advance tickets are being offered.  At the door, they are $15 for general, $12 for students/seniors.  For those who would like to support arts education programs, special “Support the Arts” tickets are $20 ($10 is tax deductible).  Tickets are available at Basically Books in Hilo and Keaau Natural Foods.  Advance tickets can be also purchase at www.bareandcore.org with credit cards.

    Part of this year’s festival, we have added a new educational component to our annual Festival.  A special school show program for children will be presented on Friday, Nov. 13 at Palace Theater.  Two school shows are scheduled in the morning.  Besides the school show, there will be an informal presentation by John “Keoni” Turalde, a pahu maker, who will share his knowledge and passion for traditional Hawaiian drums with students.  His presentation is scheduled between the two school shows on Nov. 13.  Other educational component to the annual Drum & Percussion Festival is percussion workshops.  Two new workshops are scheduled in November prior to the festival main concert.
