Regarding the previous article on “Stone Soup,” (Waimea Middle School students to make “Stone Soup” on Furlough Friday, Dec. 4) I thought it would be interesting to present the Pahoa version of this classic Grimm’s fairytale. I must have thought up this version five or 6 years ago. Pahoehoe Soup is a hilarious tale of 3 starving Hawaiian bruddahs who trick villagers into giving them ingredients to make soup, and was written to my daughter, Keicy, by me, aka Dr. Shakahashi of Pahoa, going out to all the keikis of the land. Everytime my daughter and I have soup, we smile saying, “to think we made it out of just a few pahoehoe lava rocks” — and the soup does taste somehow better.
