(Media release) — The Cannes International Film Festival kicked off yesterday, and so did the 5th annual Big Island Film Festival.
Around 100 VIP guests gathered at The Beach Club at the MaunaLani Bay to officially open the festival that has been rated as one of the “Top 25 Coolest Film Festivals” by MovieMaker magazine.
Special guests of the Festival include Oscar nominated star, Tom Berenger (attached), most recognized for roles in The Big Chill,Platoon, Major League and the soon-to-be-released mystery sci-fi thriller, Inception, also starring Leonardo DiCaprio. While Berenger’s film career has taken him all around the globe, this is his first time to Hawaii.
The Festival is also pleased to welcome home local boy, Cary Hiroyuki Tagawa. Hiroyuki Tagawa, who has starred in Memoirs of a Geisha, The Art of War, Picture Bride and more is a vocal advocate for portraying the “real” Hawaiiian film and bringing local stories to the big screen.
The Big Island Film Festival runs until Sunday, May 16, concluding with a concert by John Cruz at the Mauna Lani Bay Hotel and Bungalows. For more information visit Bigislandfilmfestival.com or call (808) 883-0394.

Generally, I have a rav review about the 2010 Big Island Film Festival. What a perfect setting for a great selection of films. I look forward to writing about the event in more detail in coming days. Mahalo nui loa to founders Jan and Leo Sears for a grand vision in BIFF.
