I’ve just read Puna Councilwoman Emily Naeole’s latest resolution urging state and federal lawmakers to amend laws to include medical, religious, and philosophical exemptions from vaccination programs.  I am mystified Auntie Emily and her staff are taking on one of those topics that triggers strong opinions and debate. It is such a hot topic, I find myself slowing down my typing to carefully choose my words.

Auntie Emily’s two-page resolution will be taken up at 9 a.m., Tuesday, Oct. 6, 2009 in the Human Service and Economic Development Committee she chairs. (Unable to link, full copy of the resolution follows the commentary.)

“In the wake of potential harm to the individual and the public from vaccinations, and the vacillating interpretation of “vaccine science,” it is in the public’s best interest to amend the vaccine laws, to include the right of medical, religious, and philosophical exemptions from mandated vaccination programs,” reads one paragraph of the resolution.  Will the Council majority agree with that evocative statement?  I anxiously await the dialogue.  I hope I’m not starting something by voicing my thoughts, but this resolution is bound to be controversial. There are some really strong, serious statements made in the resolution and, frankly, I cannot imagine our council members standing behind them.

“Vaccines are made with toxic chemicals and foreign proteins (viruses and bacteria), and some vaccines are made with genetically engineered viral and bacterial materials that prompt autoimmune diseases in many persons as well as raise cancer risks,” the resolution states.  I cannot imagine our Hawaii County Council passing this resolution with such a definitive statement. If they do, they will make national headlines I’m sure.

The resolution, if approved, will go to the mayor, along with Dr. Chiyome Fukino, director of the Department of Health, Gov. Linda Lingle, Governor; U.S. Sens. Dan Akaka and Dan Inouye, U.S. Reps. Mazie Hirano and Neil Abercrombie, U.S. Representative; the Honorable Russell Kokubun, State Senator; and the Honorable Faye P. Hanohano, State Representative

    Dr. Len Horowitz

To listen to Dr. Len Horowitz on Coast to Coast radio, click here.

Frankly, I’m not surprised by the language of this resolution knowing that Auntie Emily’s legislative assistant Roxanne “RJ” Hampton and her constant companion Sheryle “Sativa” Sulton, who volunteers for Council District 5, have worked with Dr. Leonard G. Horowitz, who has a home in Puna near the Steam Vents.  Horowitz, a dentist turned behaviorial scientist, is said to be “the vaccine industry’s greatest nemesis.” A few years back, Horowitz sued Hilo High School, the Hawaii Department of Education and the Department of Health after a TB skin test controversy involving his daughter who was a freshman at the time. I wonder if Dr. Len will testify at the Human Services and Economic Development Committee meeting. “Mind-controlled, manipulated slave of the pharmaceutical industry,” that’s how evocative Dr. Len Horowitz gets when he describes those who vaccinate.   Guaranteed, council members are going to be getting a good dose of opinions on Tuesday. How will council members react to this obvious hornets’ nest stirred by our Puna councilwoman.

Since I’m not able to upload the document as a link in the body of my commentary, read the resolution below:

HAWAI‘I STATE AND FEDERAL LEGISLATORS TO AMEND VACCINE LAWS TO INCLUDE THE RIGHT OF MEDICAL, RELIGIOUS, AND PHILOSOPHICAL EXEMPTION FROM MANDATED VACCINATION PROGRAMS.

WHEREAS, on June 11, 2009, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared a Level 6 “pandemic” and according to the International Health Regulations of 2005, the WHO and the U.N. become the controlling agencies of the U.S. in the event of a declared Level 6 Pandemic, and are entitled to control of this country under martial law; and

WHEREAS, the federal government has mandated that all Americans over the age of six months be vaccinated, and previous laws granting medical, religious, and philosophical exemptions to federally mandated vaccination programs would be repealed according to the Model State Emergency Health Powers Act (MSEHPA) “Section 807″; and

WHEREAS, Hawai‘i Revised Statute § 302A-1157, titled Exemptions from immunization; not recognized; epidemic conditions, states:  “If at any time there is, in the opinion of the department of health, danger of an epidemic from any of the communicable diseases for which immunization is required under sections 302A-1154 to 302A-1163, no exemption from immunization against the disease shall be recognized.  Quarantine shall be a legal alternative to immunization;” and

WHEREAS, vaccines are made with toxic chemicals and foreign proteins (viruses and bacteria), and some vaccines are made with genetically engineered viral and bacterial materials that prompt autoimmune diseases in many persons as well as raise cancer risks; and

WHEREAS, the $7 billion United States Government ‘fast-track program’ means that the government can legally rush vaccines onto the market in time for the autumn 2009 flu season without “normal” or adequate safety testing; and

WHEREAS, Homeland Security Bill HR 5710, Sections 1714-1717, shields the pharmaceutical industry from lawsuits for injuries caused by FDA-approved vaccines; and

WHEREAS, there is insufficient scientific evidence proving that vaccines are safe or effective, therefore it is not in the best interest of public health to impose mandatory vaccinations without exemptions; and

WHEREAS, swine flu and the flu vaccines both contain Thimerosal, a preservative for vaccines composed of mercury, one microgram of mercury is considered toxic and flu shots contain 25 micrograms. By age two, most United States children have received around 237 micrograms of mercury through vaccines; and

WHEREAS, the fast tracked government vaccines contain a substance called squalene that is suspected of causing serious long-term damage to the body; and

WHEREAS, in the wake of potential harm to the individual and the public from vaccinations, and the vacillating interpretation of “vaccine science,” it is in the public’s best interest to amend the vaccine laws, to include the right of medical, religious, and philosophical exemptions from mandated vaccination programs; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED BY the COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF Hawai‘i, that it recommends that state and federal elected officials who represent the people of the State of Hawai‘i amend vaccine laws to include medical, religious, and philosophical exemptions from mandatory vaccine programs that contain thimersol or squalene.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that any vaccine known to contain harmful viruses or any materials known to prompt autoimmune diseases or cancer risks shall provide cause for exemption for any person in the State of Hawai‘i who so desires such exemption.

BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED, that the county clerk shall forward a copy of this resolution to the Honorable William Kenoi, Mayor; Dr. Chiyome Fukino, Director Department of Health, the Honorable Linda Lingle, Governor; the Honorable Daniel Akaka, U. S. Senator, the Honorable Daniel Inouye, U. S. Senator; the Honorable Mazie Hirano, U.S. Representative; the Honorable Neil Abercrombie, U.S. Representative; the Honorable Russell Kokubun, State Senator; and the Honorable Faye P. Hanohano, State Representative.

Good show Emily least some one looking out for our okoles. Wonder if thats the reason for Kulani being taken over by National Guard. I don’t have a good feeling about any of this. Gettin time to take my family and go sailing.

  • hugh clark Says:

This county council, especialy, dealing with medical science issues is like going back to Salem and pure witchcraft. So sad in 2009.

  • don Says:

We will leave if this we are forced to take anything into our bodies that we do not want in our bodies.
To march like sheep to the mall to get a shot is not gonna happen.
Ask someone who has an autistic child when the symptoms started.
Along with the ‘food’ companies not caring now the country is run by the ‘Pharmaceutical Industrial Complex’. Watch tv and see how many ads are for ‘medicine’.
I just have less and less hope for this country.

  • Dave Smith Says:

It doesn’t take long for this resso to go off the rails:

The second whereas states that “the federal government has mandated that all Americans over the age of six months be vaccinated ….”

Maybe Horowitz, the self-described “internationally known public health authority,” could provide clarity on this claim, which appears to be false. According to the CDC web site, there are no federal vaccination requirements unless one is in the military. Apparently all 50 states do have some vaccinations requirements for school children, but nearly all allow medical exemptions, and many allow religious ones.

In fact, it appears that vaccinations for the swine flu are voluntary for everyone in the U.S. except for military personnel and New York state medical workers.

And that Model State Emergency Health Powers Act referred to was prepared in response to the 9-11 terrorist attack but never adopted, but that hasn’t stopped the conspiracy freaks from citing it religiously.

As Hugh noted, this is hardly under the purview of county government. Ms. Naeole’s time would be much better spent worrying about tangible matters of local concern.

  • Andrew Cooper Says:

While there is always some risk in vaccines, the diseases they prevent are vastly worse. In our vaccinated society, people have forgotten the scourge that polio, measles, pertussis, rubella and others represent.

Because of scare tactics from vaccine opponents like Wakefield and Horowitz the vaccinated rates are falling. Now all we have to do is wait for children to start dying, as has already stared to happen in some countries where vaccination rates have fallen off enough for these diseases to reappear… Countries like England, Canada, Australia and the United States.

  • Dave Smith Says:

    Andrew, thanks for the clarity.

  • Rob Tucker Says:

I’m beginning to get a image of R.J., Sativa and Emily wandering around Puna in the near future wearing aluminum foil hats to deflect the “negative energy”.

    More fun for everyone ahead.

  • hugh clark Says:

While Rob and I have diferent prisms and disagree on many things, we sure see this with a similar level of levity.

  • rj Says:

    What a joke.

  • Brian Jordan Says:

Sadly it’s no joke. Igorance and insanity are the only excuse for this type of decision and rumor mongering. The US Military is the test bed for most of these vaccines. I’m not saying there is not a severe reaction ratio. It’s low after a million test subjects (your military), tests it. I can’t take the vaccines most tolerate them well. So do we get rid of Penicillin, Insulin, antidepressants?

  • Pete Altomare Says:

    1) This doesn’t fall within the purview of the County Council.
    2) Guess there’s an election next year and somebody needs some issues to run on- rational or irrational.
    3) Very good humor Rob- but the whole thing is a sad commentary on the level of public discourse.
    4) Thanks Brian for injecting some facts into the discussion. (Pun is unashamedly deliberate).

  • G Dalton Says:

Where are all the VA cases coming from for Gulf War veterans. Bush/Clinton signed presidential decrees that the UN is to take over in a emergency. Why are so many young kids with ADA/HADA problems, now up to 4 in 10 kids. My daughters one year old sons both ran 103- 105 temps for days after vaccine shots only tylenol keep them drugged through the ordeal. Canadian Doctor has cases in NY Supreme court on brain damage with MRI scans showing damage before and after shots, they show mini brain strokes for both kids and adults. Kids only have 64 combined vaccines before 18 yrs old. But heck who gives a dam about the kids, pass me another beer, I’m busy buying some more stock in those big Pharma co. going to get rich that the American way.

  • Andrew Cooper Says:

Attention disorders? Maybe something to do with growing up in front of a television?

I doubt any “big pharma” is growing rich on childhood vaccines, they are some of the lowest margin products in the drug trade, so much so that most companies don’t make them, often leading to shortages. Better to invest in some name brand cholesterol drug, or impotence cure that you can patent, advertise and sell for ridiculous profits.

  • Rob Tucker Says:

My sister was one of the last to get polio before the vaccine became available.

There are facts and there are fears.

  • Greg Says:

NPR will feature a segment on the new swineflu vaccine on Monday (10/5) morning’s show.

  • Jerry Carr Says:

Just when we thought things couldn’t get any crazier, we get this. Of course some people have bad reactions to immunizations, but the number of lives saved far, far outweighs the risks. Like Rob, I have family members who are still living with polio disabilities fifty something years later. Look back at mortality statistics from as recently as the mid-20th century and you will see significant numbers of deaths due to what are now easily preventable diseases.

Emily and her staff may be anticipating a close election and don’t want to miss out on the anti-vaccination fringe vote. That’s the only reason I can even imagine for such a lame proposal. Oh wait. We’re talking about Emily. Nothing is too lame to imagine.

  • Bruce Albrecht Says:

Sorry, the statistical data overwhelmingly supports the benefits of vaccination. Funny how I never hear the nay-sayers advocating banning the automobile, even though they contribute to vastly more injuries and death in children than adverse reactions to vaccines.
Of course there are risks in vaccines but a review of the statistical data demonstrates the chances of complication are statistically remote. Conversely, the risks involved with not vaccinating are significant–we are seeing diseases that were all but eradicated reappearing due to non-vaccination.

Moving beyond this argument, the fact that my tax dollars have paid for the drafting of this useless piece of drivel is reprehensible. Yet another demonstration of incompetence by our council.

  • Andrew Cooper Says:

I agree, why is Naeole messing with this at all, except for appearances sake. Probably for someone who made an appeal to her. This is not a county issue and there are far more pressing issues for the county to be dealing with. Another council waste of time.

  • G Dalton Says:

One year old screwed up by tv what the fk. My grandson was normal till vaccines just about cooked him. We had our hand on the 911 button all day & night. The pediatricians nurse says this is what happens, what!!!That was six months ago, now hes having serious problems and getting worse, not good at all. This is going to be a major life long effort for my daughter to deal with. When this is so close to home, I don’t like hearing smartypants B/S.

  • damon Says:

    Andrew…

Naeole isn’t really messing with this… Nuff said…

    Ghost writers?

People please quit asking me if I am Aunties “Ghost Writer”… anyone that reads my blog… knows I don’t write like that.

  • Steve Offenbaker Says:

This is what I think happened. someone from Puna went to Emily and told her some horror story about shots and us all being force to get them. Being that I think she really wants to help puna she went to work on this the problem is that she does not understand that nobody is being forced to do this she also does not understand that the science that says the shots are bad is scetchy at best she also doesn’t get that the Feds and the state would look at this and roll their eyes it another piece of angel soft legislation I really think Emily wants to help I just think alot of times she is in way over her head. There will be hours of testimony on this reso that means nothing and will probably not pass sorry or any typos this is from my phone

  • G Dalton Says:

No this should be a Fed issue. There has been a lot of congressional testimony on this but since all our Hawaii politicians have heavy funding from health insurance and big pharma its not a issue to them. A huge amount of violence here is from these kids and adults with screwed up heads. How many beating, stabbing, killing in the papers. All the mainland school shotting has been traced back to the same problem these kids are on antidepressants with screwed heads. Heavy suicide rates by military have the same mo, how many come home and off their family or themselves. When these soldiers come off meds look out. Our police/courts/prisons are overflowing with kids/adults with screwed up heads. Schools dispense antidepressants to try and get a hold, but its not working well. Somebody better get a handle on this, its starting to get very expensive and very dangerous. How much of our local budget plus DOE and State is being used up trying and deal with this. Its about time to pull our heads out of sand.

  • Steven Offenbaker Says:

G Dalton: Could you please name for me the DOE school that hands out antidepressants?

It is my understanding that they can’t even give out advil to students so if this is happening it is in fact a criminal act.

All my kids had all the shots, one is a star ball player, the other has a 4.0 GPA, my kindergartner is several grade levels ahead and my preschooler is ahead as well. I think in ALOT of cases NOT ALL but ALOT use this as just another cop out, another in a long line of ways for people to avoid responsibility for there actions…”oh the chicken pox shot made me do it”

Antidepressants are not the same as what we are talking about here. Your gripe is with doctors that prescribe these to kids, this is different then being encouraged to get a flu shot, and this is also a prime example of the kind of testimony you can expect at council when it comes up

  • G Dalton Says:

This is all new research. Neurologists studying the problem use MRI images of before and after of vaccines shots. The MRI show that extremely small blood vessels in the brain are dieing off. It appears that the stronger the immune system fights off the vaccine, the greater the vessel die off. In effect your have a serious of mini strokes. It doesn’t matter what age you are its the same result. Military are given some very powerful experimental brews. Some people will recover better that others and it also depends on what you have been given. Doctors trained to look can see small changes in your face patterns similar to larger stroke victims.

  • John Powell Says:

G Dalton, perhaps you could give some sort of cite to the evidence for your claims. It’s possible that you’re onto the cutting edge of medical science. Or, you could just be a nut. I know which way I’m betting.

  • Pua Says:

Oh Boy, here we go again.

I have family and friends that had polio before vaccine available. My children have had all the standard vaccines and you are given extensive nformation onpotential side-effects and risks when you have them adminsitered. But against the slight risk, is the very real risk of the disease withut vaccination.

Recent studies on the link between vaccines and autism have shown no link.

On the other hand recent studies on marijuana have shown that it may have some anti-cancer benefits. My authority for both the above (take it for what its worth) is Dr. Dean Edell who has cited these studies onhis talk show.

I’ve also read some of the literature on autism and have not seen any credible evidence of a link between vaccines and autism. there are anecdotal stories but no real science that I am aware of.

But this reso is another example of the council introducing resos that have nothing to do with their jurisdiction and will waste their time. if she is personally opposed to it, then write a letter to Lingle, congress etc. But don’t take up council time and resources (and public funds to apy for staff etc.) for this matter.

And yes, this looks like it was written by someone other than Emily or her staff. It’s probably being introduced by her as a favor.

  • hugh clark Says:

Stephen, my child has been attending public schools for nearly 13 years. She has experiences of students being counseled, if not reprimanded, for consuming over-the-counter medicine such as aspirin or Aleve, let alone legallly prescribed medicine.

I know of no instances of the school prescribing anything. They simply call you at home and say your kid is sick. Pick her up.

I suspect others on this entry are dispensing more urban rumor.

  • Andrew Cooper Says:

What I do know is that when the whole idea of vaccine problems came to light a number of researchers around the world checked into the idea. They found no diff in the rates of autism between unvaccinated and vaccinated kids. Some of the European studies covered thousands of kids. There may be a problem somewhere, but it is unlikely to be the vaccines.

  • Tiffany Edwards Hunt Says:

Oh, it stinks like poo-poo on this thread…

    Folks, as I said, a hornets’ nest…

Steve is right in that comments here will mirror testimony in tomorrow’s committee meeting.

While I can’t imagine schools are literally handing out anti-depressants to children, I do read G. Dalton’s point that we have a lot of children in America who school counselors may be recommending to their health care providers that they be medicated with some sort of downer… Or anti-depressant… Or anti-psychotic…
What I would ask is, knowing this is one of those EXTREMELY TOUCHY subjects, let’s not be calling each other “nuts.”

There are people who genuinely believe their child’s autism resulted from vaccinations — not mandatory as the resolution inaccurately states — STRONGLY RECOMMENDED by pediatricians… Respect that, please. If you talk with occupational therapists who work with kids with neurological disorders, they recommend delaying vaccinations until the central nervous system is developed in the children…
If you look at the list of vaccinations, there are far more shots being recommended than when I was a kid…
I just want to strongly emphasize that people have varying opinions based on “fact” and “fear,” as Rob so poignantly stated.
This is a touchy subject, even in my own Ohana…

    As I said, a hornets’ nest…

What is a wonder to me is how far away from their mission council members are… They have traditionally been tasked with policy decisions related to land use and planning, roads, water or the lack thereof, sewer, wastewater…

Why Auntie Em allowed her ghostwriters to focus on this sort of resolution and not stay on the capital improvement project for the pool lights is beyond me… I was embarrassed for her at the Mayor’s Talk Story when someone asked for pool hours to be extended and Auntie could offer no update on her CIP…

What about Kapoho? I read in the paper last week that it will cost up to $50,000 per lot to address the wastewater problem there (hope to follow that up in a separate thread). What will Council District 5 do to facilitate a discussion about that?

Focus on the basic services… Stay away from the hornets’ nests, with inflammatory resolutions about issues outside the purview of the County Council…

If Council District wants to be all over the map in all other business aside from their true mission, I suggest a major campaign drive to get the state Department of Transportation to remedy the problem intersection of Highway 130 and Pahoa Village Road…

  • Tom Lackey Says:

This is fascinating and it seem that only Auntie can get herself in the middle of an issue like this. I have visions dancing around in my head for some toons, but I’m going to wait to see what happens at the introduction of this.

And pray tell, what are those dies in the head????

  • rj hampton Says:

    Aloha,

I just received this email and we plan to be on this call.

Our office may be criticized for this resolution but we believe this resolution is an important one.

Especially since elected officials will have to support the plan in the near future so while we concentrate on pool lights and CIP wish lists and land deals we have enough energy to focus on this issue too.

    rj

For the record: What’s with all this ghost stuff? J

    Dear County Official colleagues,

The White House Office of Intergovernmental Affairs – with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) – is inviting local elected officials to be on a special call about H1N1 preparation at 4:00 PM (EDT) TOMORROW (Tuesday, October 6).

We are asking that you invite your county officials around the country and/or their health representative onto the call.

The call will feature Dr. Nicole Lurie, Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response, and Dr. Anne Schuchat, Chief Health Officer at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Dr. Lurie and Dr. Schuchat will provide updates on the H1N1 Influenza situation nationally, discuss available federal tools and resources, and describe the status of the vaccination campaign.

Here is the information for joining the call:

  • Darren Says:

Big Pharma doesn’t make money on vaccinations?

    And all vaccinations are a-okay?

Such faith-based convictions ought to scare the bejeezus out of any rational people.

Shall we also conclude, so knowingly, that Big Pharma has no special interests in D.C.? That Big Pharma is actually on our side?

Might Big Pharma, in its goodness, advise, “Don’t take our treatment folks, we’re mostly in it for the money.”

Anyway, it’s a fascinating look into our respective world-views. I reckon that those who take Big Pharma pills have a certain compunction that inspires such advocacy for Big Pharma’s righteousness.

It might be interesting for us readers to anonymously participate in a poll: “How many prescribed pills do you take?” (Incidentally, I can’t run a poll on my blog due to the reality that the subject is just too touchy with family practice and history. ..Not to mention that my.. three readers would hardly provide conclusive results..)

A dicey subject for sure. But one worthy of sincere community discussion.

  • M (J's older brother) Says:

I think Darren might be onto something. Maybe Big Pharma (those arch-fiends!) are putting something into their pills that weaken people’s resistance to Big Pharma’s claims. Of course there’s no scientific evidence of that, but doesn’t that just show that something’s being covered up?
As the Amazing Kreskin so eloquently put it in *Plan 9 From Outer Space* – “Can you prove it didn’t happen?”

  • Dave Smith Says:

Darren, where in this thread did anyone say vaccines are “a-okay,” or anything similar?

I count at least six pro-vaccine comments noting that they come with risks. Both Pua and Andrew note that there has not been a definitive connection between vaccinations and autism, but that’s not the same as saying they are always harmless.

  • James Weatherford Says:

For those who are intrigued by a County Council Resolution containing unfounded assertions, see Resolution 66-09, which passed with 7 aye votes last May 4.

This was my response to the Council after that vote:

“Many of the statements in Resolution 66-09 are simply not true – saying them, writing them, and voting for them does not change their falsity.

By acting in such a manner, the 7 ‘yes’ votes have established a precedent that sets a very low standard for veracity of legislation.

Truth and honesty have been voted against, while fabrication and dishonesty have been deemed acceptable by 7 of 9 members.”

So, the precedent has been set and the low standard established.

  • Tiffany Edwards Hunt Says:

Mahalo, RJ, for the word about the conference call… I presume that Auntie Emily will participate and hopefully afterward you can tell us what sort of update you have received about the H1N1 vaccine campaign… I personally will not be seeking out a shot against the swine flu, but there are others who read this blog who might.

As for the “ghost stuff,” the term ghostwriter is not meant to be offensive…

    James, what was Resolution 66-09?

  • Greg Says:

The problem with this legislation is that is totally unneccessary. A person (other than military) can no more be forced to take a vaccine against their will than be required by government to brush their teeth(evil flouride).

Why does the county need to be involved?

  • Andrew Cooper Says:

The problem with vaccines is that what one person does affects the health of others. For vaccines to be effective against some contagious diseases a certain percentage of the population needs to be vaccinated for the population to be protected. If not the disease can spread, and will kill/maim those are not vaccinated or those who can not be vaccinated for medical reasons (very young children, some elderly or those who are immunodeficient or allergic).

The decision on vaccines becomes a community decision, not a personal one. Anyone who attempts to portray this as a personal choice is being misinformed at best.

  • James Weatherford Says:

    Tiff

Reso 66-09, by member Greenwell, to bring all the state’s solid waste to this island.
Waste is, by state law, a responsibility of the county.
The reso was pumped with hype and delusional economic assertions with no evidence of their veracity.
While the several resolutions I have read carefully can pump up cause in the ‘whereas’ statements, a line was crossed with Reso 66-09. This statement in Reso 237-09 may have also crossed the line “the federal government has mandated that all Americans over the age of six months be vaccinated…”
As for interpretations in Reso 237-09 regarding other legal matters, what is the position of the Corporation Counsel? This resolution did go there during drafting, right?

  • Darren Says:

Sounds like the crusades of the dark ages to me! Lest everyone in the community submit, we’ll be plagued with the non-believers and their evil nature!

M – Yes, the pills are often manifestations of engineered/marketed “needs” that keep Big Pharma’s business model (among many others) afloat while furthering community impotence.

Dave – I appreciate your policing of my semi-straw-man argument.

Nonetheless, iatrogenic illness(“treatment” messing you up) for its ubiquity, receives too little press.

  • G Dalton Says:

Google Dr. Andrew Moulden Phd or ageofautism or safeminds.org or just autism. Theres a problem. Try and open up your heads these kids are our future, don’t sell em out otherwise they’ll come back and die a hole in your head. In todays news autism doubled since 2003.

  • Bruce Albrecht Says:

    Via email:

“how can you compare mandatory vaccination with automobiles .. My father is a respected surgeon and thinks that the pharmeceutical companies are out of control . ITs all about the almighty dollar and how much they can make .. this issue is about having the right to decide what goes into your body .. thats it
whats next ? mandatory computer chips? sincerely Bonnie Morgan on Maui”

    Ms. Morgan,

It is far more constructive to post your comments here than to reply to me personally so that others may benefit from your POV.

NOBODY (except maybe certain ill-informed council members) is suggesting mandatory vaccinations for the general public. Rest assured you shall still have the right to choose.
I too have many issues with our “chemical culture” and our willingness to pump all sorts of crap into our bodies (drugs to counteract the side effects of other drugs, egads!). Every substance that you place into your body should be carefully considered for its benefits.

Having said all that, I suggest you review my original post. My conjecture is that vaccinations in general serve the public good far more than they harm. Yes, they do not come without risk, but careful scientific review of the enormous amount of evidence demonstrates that that most of the vaccines currently recommended by doctors are quite statistically safe. In other words, you are far more likely to suffer injury or death from an automobile accident than you are from a vaccine. This should not be taken as a blanket endorsement of all vaccines; as I stated earlier careful review of the data available (and scrutiny of the sources of that data) should precede any decision to vaccinate.

I suggest you browse the following entries:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polio
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smallpox
as part of the decision-making process of vaccinating.
I would be interested in hearing what your father thinks of the vaccines for these.

All sincere sympathies regarding autism… you should actually read the whole story in the news which you refer to. You make it sound very simple. The story is much more complex than that. Some points you neglect to mention are:

    A) The ability to diagnose autism early may be improving and thus resulting in a higher rate and

    B) Autism may be a name for a wide variety of different conditions with similar symptoms.

So much is not known about this affliction….

A lot of people are firing in the dark. I do not know whats the problem, but its getting worse. A lot of pointers are headed at vaccines. I my day only one shot at a time now 3,4,5 at a time and at birth, at 1 yr and so on. 64 different types before your 18 yrs old. Someone needs to step up to the plate and put some effort in. Hawaii CC is not the right place but where is the right place. The money to fix is coming out of our pockets. Less than a third of the population has any faith in gov. swine shots, for that matter much faith in Gov…

  • Brian Jordan Says:

Greg the kids are our future. We gripe about 4,800 dead in war over 10 years and forget 500-700,000 die every year from heart diseae. Perhaps food with no nutritional value is a cause for many our childrens illnesses? Autism and other reactions may not be a simple inability to adapt to a vaccine. The polio vaccine Rob mentioned was given to kids who basically ate real food. As I explained the test bed is 1,000,000 healthy Americans whose diet and fitness regimen is controlled. However if you give this same medicine to people who live on chips sugar and salt the results may differ markedly. We take no personal responsibilty for our diet. We ask the government for help and when it is not perfect (an impossibilty) we bitch and sue. Kids do get a fever from vaccines normally not 105. This is a rational reason for that child or these children to be watched after their next vaccine. This vaccine is nasally injected which is far more efficient and allows for less chemical change as it does not travel through the muscles it is inhaled directly into the pulmonary system. This is becasue the disease is being introduced into the host to prepare the correct anti-bodies. However if you eat junkfood the body doesn’t have the corrext building blocks to mount a defense. Just a thought.
Morbid Obesity is not the CDC’s fault. Substance abuse and immune deficiency are not the CDC’s fault.
Greg your children may be like me unable to handle these types of vaccinations. That doesn’t mean we should prevent protecting others who can tolerate the treatment regime.

  • Jerry Carr Says:

Brian makes some excellent points. If we look at all the changes in our society that might affect autism, vaccinations are a relatively small part of the total picture. Diet, pollution, TV, computers, video games, levels of parental involvement, drug use by parents, medications used by children and/or parents, and a host of other potential factors come to mind. We don’t really know just what all these things are doing to our children. We do know, however, that vaccinations save uncounted lives.

  • Hattie Says:

Well I worked at Kulani and it’s just lucky for me I didn’t get TB because so many prisoners had it, and staff, too.
Geez, it’s back to the Middle Ages around here.

  • James Weatherford Says:

Brian raises a valid point re nutrition.
The stuff children put in their mouths — or that parents put in the children’s mouths — is known to have negative health effects.
These are so-called foods previously not consumed in such large quantities at the exclusion of real food like fresh fruit and veggies, and fresh meat and fish without antibiotics or hormones.
Three big baddies: high-fructose corn syrup, in the form of sweet sodas, by the gallons; sodium in its various forms in large quantities of processed foods; and hydrogenated oil for cooking almost everything.

Interactions with junk food and other stuff going into the body? Worth thinking about.

  • Steve Offenbaker Says:

Well since we know rj Hampton is reading could please ask you to cite the source of “the federal government has mandated” where did you pull this information from?

  • Hattie Says:

  • SB Says:

You mean the other council members bought into this reso. I think tiff is right, this stuff belongs elsewhere. Do you know if my councilmember from dist. 4 bought into it also. Wish these guys would concentrate on what is in there purview.

  • Cheryl King Says:

The Hawaiians were already decimated by Western illnesses in the past. I don’t think Emily is really looking out for her “people” or “Puna” for that matter. She obviously hasn’t considered the number of lives saved or disabilities avoided compared to the rare case of someone who is really negatively affected by a vaccine.

Aloha, I guess you know by now that resolution 237-09 has moved out of committee with a favorable recommendation. I want to thank y’all for your candid viewpoints and criticism. I could see the merit in what some of you were saying and it lead to us making amendments.

Is my tinfoil hat on straight? 

  • Tiffany Edwards Hunt Says:

Thanks for the update, RJ… I’m curious to know what are the amendments and what was the vote? How many testified? I was Pahoabound and unable to make the meeting.

  • Rob Tucker Says:

    Great job R.J.,

I’m sure the Federal Government and the World Health Organization will be impressed.

Now, is there any chance you can tell us when the Pahoa Pool lighting, initiated by Councilwoman Naeole about three years ago, will be installed?

  • rj. hampton Says:

Rob, Let there be lights! I did what I had to do
Clayton the deputy of Department of Parks and Recreation
told me today at committee meeting its all been done.
What now must happen they have to check the power system.
As for when they will be installed I will check and get back to you.

  • Dave Smith Says:

It was very disappointing to see today’s coverage in the island’s daily newspapers on this issue. Neither reporter picked up on the fact that the basis for the resolution – that everyone COULD be forced to take a vaccination – is bogus and based on a nonexistent federal law. The “Act” hasn’t been approved by Congress since its drafting eight years ago, and given the constitutional questions it has generated it likely never will be.

To reiterate: Other than members of the military, who voluntarily agreed to put their lives under government control, NO ONE has to take the vaccine.

It was also disappointing to see so many of Ms. Naeole’s colleagues going along with this charade – voting to stop something that isn’t happening. What an utter waste of time.

Flu Fact: H1N1 Flu Vaccination is VOLUNTARY

    September 28, 2009

There is currently a petition circulating on a few internet sites protesting the federal government’s “mandatory” H1N1 vaccination program. Here’s a flu fact for you: the federal vaccination program for H1N1 flu is VOLUNTARY, just like the seasonal flu vaccination program. Top federal health officials highly recommend that people get vaccinated, and they stress that the vaccine is the best defense against the 2009 H1N1 flu. People with underlying health conditions like asthma or diabetes, health care workers, pregnant women, caregivers for infants under six months of age, and children and young adults from six months to 24 years of age are especially encouraged to participate in this vaccination program. The vaccine will be available to anyone who wants it, and the decision to get vaccinated is up to each individual.

Note: In a few local jurisdictions, vaccination is being required for health care workers. That is a local decision, not a federal one.

What Congress Dave? This is a state issue.

The Model Act was drafted to help States make additions to their public health emergency laws.

One man from Johns Hopkins University in October 2001 after the Anthax scare and deaths put these laws on paper and suggested the states incorporate them into their own public emergency health laws. The results is what you can read for your self.

Look at the dates in this doucument and tell me if they have been repealed.

    Then check out PL108-276

Then check out Homeland Security Domestic emergency

Then look at Pandemic and all- hazards Preparedness Act S.3678

Then Look at Project BioShield Act 2004

(This is a duplicate post from a more recent entry on changes Ms. Naeole is making to her anti-vaccination bill. I am reposting it on this thread for context because it is partly in response to RJ’s post above.

RJ, I don’t have time to go through all the things you cite, but if it’s a state issue, why don’t you cite state law? Instead you cite “text” from a law (the Model State Emergency Powers Act) that has never been enacted by any government in that form. If it’s so worrisome, it should be easy for you to cite specific law that actually applies in this case. Rather than extremely vague comments, show us where law gives “public health officials the power to vaccinate all Americans over the age of six months,” especially in Hawaii.

Woulda, coulda and shoulda don’t count.

    Yet more fear-mongering and shibai.

  • MIKE D Says:

I know its a hard issue to understand , we are tought to think that the instituions that guide our lives are there to “protect” us. We also take pride in our installed values of love for our country, however we seem to forget that “Gorge Washington don’t live here no more ” its easy to believe the goverment when they say “nothing to see here folks, move on” or when your Docter tell you the only way to heal your self is with this pill, but its harder to FIND THE TIME to actuly do real research and come up with a wise decision over our lives or over the uneducated, unresearched information or disinformation we provide. thankyou R.J. CETIVA, and EMILY for iooking out for the community………………

  • Dave Smith Says:

Mr. D, care to enlighten us as the “real research” you yourself have done?

Speaking of “uneducated, unresearched information or disinformation,” google mandatory vaccinations and you’ll find tons.

  • Brian Jordan Says:

NO forced vaccinations. No Mercury in the nasal solution. No real thought at the County level. Which can do jack all about a State and Federal Health issue. More time wasted by an overpaid and uninformed Councilwoman.

  • rj hampton Says:

The Hawaii Tribune Herald’s (HTH) article dated Oct. 8, 2009 entitled ‘Flu Resolution Refuted’ had a large photo on the front page of a Kaiser medical assistant administering a dose of Fluvirin vaccine. In researching that particular product I found that Fluvirin vaccine had been recalled twice, once in June of 2005 and again as recent as February 4, 2009.

Most of what the state responded to in the article felt more like propaganda or the promotion of a vaccine product then a sincere effort to give concerned people an understanding of what they are being asked to inject into their bloodstreams and the bloodstreams of their children.

The county council did not “endorse” Resolution 237-09 the council simply passed it out of committee so that exemptions from mandatory vaccinations programs could be discussed openly and intelligently. The state and county are not at odds as it said in the articles headline over the vaccine they are at odds over the removal of medical, religious and philosophical exemptions from federally mandated vaccination programs.

In the article, the US Secretary of Health and Human Services, Kathleen Sebelius, says vaccines are “safe” and “vouches unconditionally” for them. Yet earlier this year Ms. Sebelius signed a decree shielding the pharmaceutical industry from lawsuits for side effects caused by FDA-approved vaccines. Ms. Sebelius made her statements knowing full well laws are in place protecting the vaccine makers at the expense of the citizenry.

The point here is that, many people see that mandatory vaccine laws are in place and that it is fair to ask our representatives to revisit and amend the Hawai‘i Revised Statute Section 302A-1157, that states “If at any time there is, in the opinion of the department of health, danger of an epidemic from any of the communicable diseases for which immunization is required, no exemption from immunization against the disease shall be recognized. Quarantine shall be a legal alternative to immunization.”
The question of mercury and levels of mercury in vaccines was responded to in the article with such statement as “The mercury in the vaccine is less then a serving of ahi” This ahi statement doesn’t really make sense because we are talking about injecting mercury not ingesting. Still she does make a good point about the levels of mercury that are in our foods.
Because of Resolution 237-09 and the subsequent HTH article people are now aware that there is a mercury free vaccine (there is a shortage of the mercury-free vaccine and soon people may not be able to get it) but just when you think you are out of the woods here is a list of other things you will probably find in your vaccines. They include, but are definitely not limited to: formaldehyde, aluminum hydroxide, aluminum phosphate, thimerosal (mercury), monosodium L-glutamate (MSG), monkey kidney cells, cow serum, hydrolized gelatin, chick embryonic fluid, human diploid cells from aborted fetal tissue (now you know what they do with aborted babies), rhesus monkey fetal lung cells, vesicle fluid from calf skins, guinea pig embryo cells, albumin from human blood, aspartame (artificial sweetener), phenol, and polydimethylsiloxane (silicone)
In closing if one does their homework exemption and unsafe ingredients is not the lnoy thing to concern us the is the issue of DNA based vaccines which are even faster to manufacture. Utilizing a cell based CULTURE TEHONOLGY growing viruses in ‘bioreactors’. It’s all about production not prevention of disease. How can we ever keep up?

  • Rob Tucker Says:

    How to keep up?

    1. Fold the aluminum foil into a large double sided triangle.

    2. Grab at two points on the rim and expand the triangle.

    3. Place on head.

Aloha from de mainland here… good to see somebody standing up for our constitutional freedoms, even if it’s a tiny local gov’t body. May the news get out, as an example for others to follow. Like the small towns you see every once in a while, declaring with signs that they are ‘Nuclear Free’ zones. There is no reason any government should be able to force me to take into my body anything I believe may be harmful. Will they sign a legal document saying they guarantee that the vaccine will absolutely not harm me? No? Then that is good enough reason for me to refuse it. We should be ‘Pro-Choice’ on this most important issue. Those who cry that we are returning to the Dark Ages just have no idea how powerful the body’s immune system is when fortified with natural stuff like vitamin D, C, Zinc, fresh veggies, enough sleep, a few choice herbs like Astragalus and certain homeopathic remedies. How people can think that artificial, patentable molecules laden with Mercury, are somehow what our bodies are missing is beyond me. Down with Big Pharma – up with Nature! :)
