    “I am one, but still I am one.

    I cannot do everything, but still I can do something;

    and because I cannot do everything,

    I will not refuse to do something that I can.”

    — Helen Keller

    (Media release) — Friday is yet another DOE Furlough Friday – no classes statewide for all regular public school students.  But for Waimea Middle School students, it will be classes as usual because teachers and staff have decided to remain open – a local decision they are empowered to make having voted to because the state’s first public conversion charter school in 2003.

    Staying open – and funding these work days out of the limited budget for public charter schools – is not without challenges.

    For example:  The DOE has decreed that Waimea Elementary School cafeteria staff, who are contracted to regularly feed middle school students, may not prepare and serve breakfast and lunch on Furlough Fridays, even though they are UPW members and are “on the clock.”  It’s beyond the control of the cafeteria staff.  So, Waimea Middle School is faced with providing hearty, healthy snacks to support student learning and encourage attendance on DOE Furlough Fridays.

    This week, WMS students will participate in a special school-wide “lesson” about everyone doing what they can by first reading the story about “Stone Soup,” and then making a local version of this famous magical soup. Read the rest of this entry »

    images(Media release) — Break-ins of Waimea Elementary and Middle School classrooms and cafeteria occurred two nights last week — Tuesday, Nov. 3 and and Thursday, Nov. 5, 2009 — and an attempted break-in occurred last night, Monday, Nov. 9, of the school-operated Thelma Parker Memorial Gym.  Some classroom items are missing and the two schools are working closely with the Hawai’i County Police Department.

    To help solve these incidents and prevent more from occurring, the Waimea community is being asked to help keep an eye on school facilities and the gym and report to the police any suspicious activity especially after hours and over weekends.  Also, the police have been asked to cruise the campuses after hours. droppedImage(Media release) — As the state’s first public conversion charter school, Waimea Middle School was open as usual on Friday, Oct. 23, 2009, and plans to be open on Oct. 30 and all of the DOE’s Furlough Fridays this school year.

    Breakfast and lunch will be available as usual in the school cafeteria and there will be bus service.  A special Furlough Friday bus schedule has been sent home to families.  If families are unsure about bus pickup times,  call (808) 937-2833.

    Attendance at school is extremely important every day and all students are expected to attend unless they are ill. Read the rest of this entry »
