  • Chíc Eco — Recycle Rubber Tubes into High Fashion

24 Feb 2011 /  Chic Eco, commentary, environment, Guest Columns

    by Delia Montgomery

This is a specific kind of rubber material ― tubes from motorcycles, mopeds and bicycles. These examples are hot with a sensual look. Leather designers who try this get hooked. They say it’s more like sculpting than sewing.

From 1997 until autumn 2007, Zuss was two sisters in UK turning old inner tubes into eye-catching hot couture for those intent on making a BOLD fashion statement. Since elder Virgo Goddess Krijnie, retired, Christa took the company to the future with established global fans – solo style.

  • Junk Mail Converted to Fine Art

“My pictures are made of thousands of in-congruent pieces — images and text. Assembled like a mosaic; the tiles create an entirely new image — a portrait, a landscape, a fantasy – directly from my imagination, utilizing materials that would otherwise go to waste.”
    — Sandhi Schimmel Gold

They say a picture is worth a thousand words and that’s the method you’ll find at Schimmel Art. Sandhi Schimmel Gold’s work is now collected world-wide by private and corporate collectors, in museums and notable galleries, ‒ as well as hospitality and healthcare facilities. Headquartered in Phoenix, Arizona, her art is totally green; meticulously and expertly hand-crafted.

Sandhi attended fine art school and studied mosaic work abroad. Her interest in design, fashion, art and history led her to invent a completely unique art form. Her art grew intricate in construction, innovative in style, inventive in technique, and inspiring to own.

Best of all, this artwork is free of toxic chemicals or adhesives. Workshops are periodically offered to individual students. Like Sandhi, think gorgeous, groovy and green to bring out the mosaic artist from trash in you!

  • Chíc Eco — Hawaii’s GMO Truth-in-Labeling Bill

    by Delia Montgomery

Those against GM bullies may wish to thank Honorable Tsuji Souki for introducing Hawaii’s GMO Truth-in-Labeling Bill.

The Hawaii Bill, H.B. No. 1534, is now praised as an excellent model for other states by the Organic Consumers Association in California. Dated January 26th, it’s just two pages, easy to understand, and it says it all.

Although this bill is focused on genetically-engineered food labeling, it also affects related campaign efforts. Product ingredients, such as GM-contaminated soy, do not meet standards of organic or “green” for such manufacturers and craftsmen. Ethical candle makers, for example, are frustrated sourcing non-GM soy to appease their markets.

The Hawaii State Legislature post does not include a hearing date or testimony for HB1534, so I’m hoping a commentator will enlighten me and readers.

Those interested may send a message of support to Representatives Chang and Hanohano by following the Millions Against Monsanto campaign links from the OCA site.

Founder of Homestead Weaving Studio, Chris Gustin, was ahead of her time and became an environmental recycling artisan years before the green wave hit us. She started weaving by necessity with old clothes.

Gradually, material sourcing expanded into scrap hunting from a variety of mills, factories, and manufacturers. Chris then converted those remnants into new “rag rug” products. That was the mere beginning from her small family-operated business in Indiana.

  • Chíc Eco ‒ Sustainable Hero Majora Carter 2010 + Beyond

    By Delia Montgomery

Beautiful Majora Carter was honored as one of the 100 Most Creative People in Business 2010 by Fast Company, a digital magazine about innovative leaders. Her urban planning interest began the late 1990′s where she lived in the South Bronx. There she witnessed criminal waste management by government and corporations dumping on poor neighborhoods.

Majora developed strategies to move under-performing communities into healthy and productive economic conditions with a $1.25 million Federal Transportation planning grant to develop the South Bronx Greenway, which consist of bike and pedestrian paths that connect neighborhoods to the river front. The 11-mile network was cost-effective construction with low-impact storm water management capacity. Local entrepreneurship opportunities were created, public health improved, and traffic congestion was dramatically reduced.

Interestingly, I am reading 2011 predictions of beneficial humanitarian government actions and laws. According to astrologers, there will be great structural shifts in governmental organizations with a focus on our environment.

A biggie is our reduction of fuel dependency and creating better forms of transportation. Graham Hill is Founder of Treehugger.com and Vice President for Interactive Media, Planet Green. He predicts that the fun, convenience, and health benefits related to bikes will improve urban areas immensely. Read the rest of this entry »

Pope John Paul II May 1920-April 2005

    By Delia Montgomery

Interdenominational patriarch Bartholomew I, and notorious Vatican Pope John Paul II, agree that protecting our planet is a moral and spiritual duty. Bartholomew I is known as a “green patriarch” for proclaiming years ago that harming the environment is a sin.

Bartholomew, who presides in Istanbul, Turkey, was elected as ecumenical patriarch in 1991. He publicly linked spirituality with ecology after his 1997 trip around the Black Sea. Before then, religious environmental ethics were uncharted moral terrains. Read the rest of this entry »

What is a wrap trap? A waste of money, silly!

Most people spend holiday and special occasion money on ultimate trash when they buy gift wrapping paper and ribbon. Both are rarely recycled and cause an excessive landfill burden during December. Try some relief to save trees, respect earth and make your gifts special. Read the rest of this entry »

According to Georgina M. Hunter R(S) of e-Pro Maui Real Estate Sales, this depicted fence in Haiku on Maui was supposedly given the dubious distinction of being the world’s largest surfboard fence by the Guinness Book of Records in 2007. She was told that more than 400 boards formed the artistic fence.

Fact is the property is owned by Maui surfer Donald “DJ” Dettloff. As you can imagine, each board has a story. The feature photo was taken by my eco designer friend Marla Henderson and you may view many more from Emma Perry, DJ’s artistic niece. Read the rest of this entry »

  • Ever Gotten Organic Cotton?

    By Delia Montgomery

Think cotton. Cool, soft, comfortable, … “the fabric of our lives.” But as you’ve probably heard, cotton cultivation inflicts a heavy toll on our environment. Yet its production is one of the major factors in global economic stability. The fear of running out of soil and land to grow cotton is not a pretty picture for fortune tellers, politicians or agriculture.

Fortunately, an increasing number of farmers are growing cotton organically. They eliminate toxic chemicals in every step of the growing process and therefore have far less impact on earth than conventional cotton farmers. Their practical solutions are crucial for the land we pass on to our children and grandchildren. Read the rest of this entry »

    Dear BIC Readers,

It’s been a slow faint start as a new contributor to BIC and I wish to explain the primary reason for that. I believe that two wrongs don’t make a right and I am the type of character who certainly refrains from adding fuel to fire. Not easy for me to act otherwise, but I’m spooked.

The purpose of this notice is to report blog aspersion and although I prefer to not mention names, I am confident that the regular readers of BIC know exactly who has become intently fixated on damaging my reputation, ‒ both personally and professionally.

    Senator Daniel K. Inouye

    By Delia Montgomery

Well, I said I wouldn’t be writing about politics yet here I go. It’s just impossible for me to avoid when it affects the environment and arts … not to mention our food!

How so? Many goods are made from natural resources. Soy wax is an example. The natural/organic candle makers prefer not to use GMO soy for hundreds of reasons (maybe more). It’s typical for a soy farmer to sell to both food and cosmetic industries.
