We want to make sure you are notified about the first way you can participate in the Hāmākua CDP.

CDPs are designed to reflect community values, vision, and priorities.   We are at the beginning phase of the process when core community values and people’s vision for the future of Hāmākua are established.  Those foundational values and vision will be identified through small group “talk story” meetings and from a survey. Talk story meetings are easy, fun ways to tell the County what you value about Hāmākua, what you’d like to see in Hāmākua in the future, and which ideas for the future are most important. Read more

Puna News — County Grant Funds Pohoiki Celebration

(Media release) — The Friends of Pohoiki have received a “Healing Our Island” grant for $2,000 to help fund the first annual “Ahahui `O Pohoiki” at the new Isaac Kepookalani Hale Park in Puna.

This alcohol- and drug-free community event will feature Hawaiian-style fun, games, crafts, music, plants and food from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 12, 2009.

Everyone is invited to kokua with the different activities such as teaching a Hawaiian craft, makahiki games for children, Hawaiian plant exchange, Hawaiian music, etc. Individuals or organizations may contact Luana Jones at (808) 938-0021, or log on to for more information.

The Healing Our Island community grant fund is administered by the Hawaii County Resource Center and has been instrumental in assisting grassroots community efforts to strengthen and nurture community.
